The most romantic book I’ve ever read: One Day

To kick start a brand new feature on Entice, Publicist Hannah Hargrave tells us why she fell in love with One Day by David Nicholls . .

I would have to pick a modern classic – One Day by David Nicholls which I read while on honeymoon in 2010. The two main characters, Emma and Dexter, are drawn so accurately that I almost believed they were two of my close friends. It is such a wonderful book – funny, wise, absorbing, warm and utterly sad – that I completely fell in love with it.

The tale of their unrequited love is poignant and agonising, and it really resonated with me. The heart-breaking ending may be completely devastating, but observing Emma and Dexter’s relationship over the years is so incredibly romantic and touching. It is perhaps because of the characters’ genuine flaws that One Day pulls so strongly at your emotions, as they just seem so real, and their love for each other seems genuine when compared to the overly-dramatic, sentimentalised and clichéd love you often find in fiction.

One Day is a romance you can believe in, and makes you hope and believe that one day you will get to experience something similar.

Have you read One Day? Or maybe watched the film? If there’s a romantic novel or film you simply can’t get out of your mind, we’d love to hear about it.
